NHL makes a statement on former Canucks prospect Gustav Forsling
For the second consecutive season, the Florida Panthers are off to the Eastern Conference Final and a big reason for their success thus far is the play of former Vancouver Canucks prospect Gustav Forsling.
On Friday night, Forsling played a key role in the Florida Panthers knocking out the Boston Bruins in the second round, scoring the game-winning goal with under two minutes remaining in the third period.
After the game, the National Hockey League made a post on their Public Relations account on X, saying that Gustav Forsling became the first defenceman in Florida Panthers franchise history to score a series-clinching goal.
"Gustav Forsling scored with 1:33 left in regulation to send the @FlaPanthers into their second straight Eastern Conference Final and became the first defenseman in franchise history with a series-clinching goal. #StanleyCup"
Gustav Forsling (58:27) scored the second-latest go-ahead goal in Panthers history behind Matthew Tkachuk (59:55 in Game 4 of 2023 CF), who also did so in a series-clinching game." The Linkoping, Sweden native was selected by Vancouver in the fifth round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and less than one year later, the Canucks traded him to the Chicago Blackhawks. After four seasons with the Blackhawks organization, he was placed on waivers and subsequently claimed by the Florida Panthers.
In 79 games this season, Forsling had 39 points (ten goals, 29 assists), 43 penalty minutes and was a plus-56. He's gone on to add seven points (two goals, five assists) in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Forsling and the Florida Panthers will now face the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Final, with Game 1 set for Wednesday night at 8 p.m. ET at Madison Square Garden.
