LATEST | Bruce Boudreau reveals who he would've made captain
One day after joining the Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League as a Senior Advisor, former Vancouver Canucks head coach Bruce Boudreau was a guest on the Halford & Brough podcast on Sportsnet 650 radio.
Among the topics they discussed was the vacant captaincy role in Vancouver and Boudreau was asked to give his take on which Canucks player should have the 'C' on their chest going into the 2023-24 season.
"Well, I think you guys know who my pick is already, but it's not up to me anymore, as you know and I think there would be a couple good guys. I think Petey is he stays there is going to be a great captain. He's very much like the Sedins, he's not a loud guy, he's a quiet guy, but he is definitely a leader, he wants to be put in the position to lead and he wants all the responsibility on the ice, so I think he would be a good choice." Boudreau said.
Boudreau has several very good points as to why Pettersson would be a smart choice as the team's captain going forward, but it'll be interesting to see which direction they go given his contract status after the 2023-24 campaign.
As everyone knows by now, Pettersson is entering the final year of his current contract and will become a restricted free agent next summer and that talks on a new deal have been put on hold by the Swedish forward as he prepares for the new season.
It seems unlikely that the Canucks would give him the 'C' for this season and then he leaves next summer, which has led some to wonder if they'll not name one this season and use it to contract negotiations, whenever they begin, to entice Pettersson into staying beyond this year.
If Pettersson isn't the one chosen to be captain, the Canucks do have other options, with the other two likely names being Quinn Hughes and J.T. Miller.
