The Florida Panthers have placed former 8th overall pick defenseman Adam Boqvist on waivers, offering up any team to claim him, and the Vancouver Canucks are in desperate need of an upgrade of defense.

With the drama between Vancouver Canucks teammates confirmed and their continuous effort to trade JT Miller and Elias Pettersson, they still have other areas of their team they need to address, and they may have just got a prime opportunity with the Florida Panthers latest move.

Should the Vancouver Canucks claim Adam Boqvist off waivers?

As the Vancouver Canucks continue to navigate the rough waters that is taking over the 2024-2025 season, Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford can't lose sight on other important areas of the team.
After 5-years between playing for the Chicago Blackhawks and Columbus Blue Jackets, the former 8th overall pick signed a 1-year, league minimum deal with the Reigning Stanly Cup Champion Florida Panthers.
Unfortunately, the season has not gone to plan and the Florida Panthers announced that they placed the 24-year-old on waivers for the purpose of sending him down to the AHL.

As a top-10 draft pick, his career has not blossomed like expected, but it does not mean he can't be a valued asset on another team
In all, through 227 career contests, Boqvist has notched 25 goals and 66 assists for 91 points. Through 46 games with the Blue Jackets in 2022-23, Boqvist reached a career high of 24 points counting five goals and 19 assists. - Corey Wilkins

This is where the Vancouver Canucks come in.
With a desperate need to upgrade their defensive core, it may not feel like Boqvist is one, but when looking at players such as Derek Forbort, Vincent Desharnais and Carson Soucy, he easily could be.
The Canucks weakness stems from the right side of the blue line, where he could provide much needed depth with still being able to be an efficient puck mover, when the Canucks are lacking.
The main upside to Boqvist being a Vancouver Canuck is that it poses absolutely no risk with extreme upside.
Being just 24-years-old and earning just $775,000 for this season, if it doesn't work out, then it is no sweat of Allvin's back.
If it does, then they have a former 8th overall pick that has finally found his game.
