The Vancouver Canucks newest defenceman Nikita Zadorov is on an expiring contract, but the team hopes to keep him for the long haul.

Canucks reporter Rick Dhaliwal was on with Sportsnet's Halford and Brough on Friday morning and said a sign and trade was discussed when working out this deal, and that the Canucks will look to extend the towering blueliner.

I will be very, very, very surprised if Canucks don't extend Zadorov before July 1st. I certainly think it's on the menu,
Rick Dhaliwal.

And there may be mutual interest in an extension from the Zadorov camp.

Zadorov's agent Agent Milstein said the Canucks were one of the teams at the "top of his list" and that they knew about Vancouver's interest for some time now.

Milstein also represents Canucks forwards Andrei Kuzmenko and Ilya Mikheyev.

Dhaliwal has said that Zadorov was the primary target for Vancouver for quite some time, and insiders have reported other interested teams were only able to add him if Calgary retained money.
