During their game against Bemidji State University, University of Minnesota-Duluth forward and Vancouver Canucks prospect Matthew Perkins scored his first career goal in the NCAA. He also added a pair of assists to improve to four points in his first two NCAA games.
The 19-year-old's first career goal came on the powerplay early on in the first period of Friday's game. Perkins picked up a rebound that went off the goalie's pad from a shot from the point and buried it home to give the University of Minnesota-Duluth a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the contest.
Perkins, a native of Balgonie, Saskatchewan, was selected in the fourth round (119th overall) by the Vancouver Canucks back in June's NHL Entry Draft out of the USHL and after a pretty good season with Youngstown, it looks like he's having no issues adapting to the NCAA.
The Canucks prospect pool is full of talent; At the same time, there aren't many big names other than Tom Willander, Jonathan Lekkerimaki and Aatu Raty, but several players will likely make an impact on the NHL roster in the next three-to-five years. If the scouting staff and Patrik Allvin continue to draft the way they have been, there's no doubt that the Canucks will be set up for plenty of success in the future.
