LATEST | Former Canucks staffer compares Pettersson to Maple Leafs star; predicts next cap hit
While on Sekeres & Price, former Vancouver Canucks staffer Rachel Doerrie compared Elias Pettersson to Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews and gave her thoughts on his next contract.
Doerrie said that Pettersson is one of the most underrated players in the entire National Hockey League and deserves to be paid in the same range as Auston Matthews, with the minimum being $10 million per season.
"He's one of the most underrated players in the league. At min. a $10M player...the Auston Matthews comparison is a fair one...I think he should get in the same ballpark." Doerrie said.
While Pettersson is a fantastic player, it's hard to compare him to someone like Auston Matthews. If we're looking at how important each player is to their respective team, then it's a fair comparison, but if we're talking about their offensive production, Matthews has a significant advantage over the Canucks forward.
Contract negotiations between the Canucks and Elias Pettersson's camp are set to begin later this summer, potentially in September before the start of training camp. Pettersson's agent JP Barry confirmed that this past week regarding the negotiations, but said that preliminary discussions between both sides have taken place.
