LATEST | NHL makes a statement involving Canucks defenceman Quinn Hughes
Vancouver Canucks defenceman Quinn Hughes had an outstanding performance during the team's 10-1 rout over the winless San Jose Sharks.
Hughes recorded five points in the win, scoring one goal while adding four assists to help his team to the victory and now he leads all defencemen in the National Hockey League in points with 16.
His five-point night caught the attention of many around the hockey world and the National Hockey League's Public Relations X account made a pair of posts highlighting his performance.
Hughes became the 11th defenceman in National Hockey League history to have 20 or more three-point games aged 24-years-old or younger, joining other players such as Paul Coffey, Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, Denis Potvin, among others.
"Four first-period goals for the @Canucks. Three first-period points for Quinn Hughes."
Hughes also became the fifth defencemen in the last five-years to record a five-point game. He also tied a Vancouver Canucks franchise history for most points in a single game by a defenceman, first accomplished by Jeff Brown in 1995.
"Quinn Hughes factored on five of 10 @Canucks goals Thursday and became the fifth defenseman in the past five years with a five-point game."
With the way Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson, among others, are playing to start the season, the sky is the limit with this group and there's no doubt that they could make it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2020.
