Quinn Hughes took his whole game to a new level when he was named captain of the Vancouver Canucks. There had been many conversations debating whether he had what it takes to become one of the league's best all-around defensemen, and this year, he answered the call.
In 82 games this season, the Canucks' number 43 contributed 16 more points, with a league-leading 92 points, compared to the 76 he collected in 2022-2023. To clarify that he had also improved his defending game, his differential spiked and went from a +15 (2022/2023) to a +38 (2023/2024).
However, even a Norris Winning Trophy worth a season isn't enough to shut down every detractor. Member of the renowned Spittin Chiclets podcast made of notable former NHLers, Matt Murley claims that Quinn Hughes doesn't have what it takes to lead a team to the Stanley Cup as their number one Defenseman:
Can the Canucks win the Stanley Cup with Quinn Hughes as their number-one defenseman??
@mattmurley19 says no chance.
The responses to the popular podcast were numerous, and the majority claimed Murley's naiveness. As you probably guessed, he was scorched on the network:
Following the rankings that stated Quinn Hughes was a third-tier Defenseman at the beginning of the year, he made it a personal vendetta to prove them wrong. As the Canucks play the Nashville Predators in the first round of the playoffs, he will make it his duty to lead his team to the next level.
