Buyout Incoming From Vancouver Canucks Star Elias Pettersson Per Insider

An NHL insider believes that Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson could be a buyout candidate in the coming years as his struggles continue this season.
The National Hockey League's trade deadline is less than a week away and while Elias Pettersson's name was out there prior to the
J.T. Miller deal, many believe it'll be
too hard to move him due to his struggles throughout the 2024-25 season.
Insider believes Elias Pettersson could be bought out in coming years
Now, it's very unlikely this would happen in the summer or next summer or even in 2027, especially given the salary cap implications, but while making an appearance on Donnie & Dhali yesterday, TSN's Farhan Lalji said he believes Elias Pettersson could get bought out at some point in the future.
"Truly, I believe at some point this contract of Elias Pettersson is going to get bought out, it's just a case of which team is going to end up doing it and what year.." Lalji said.
Since the start of February 2024, Elias Pettersson has registered just 19 goals in his last 99 games, including the Stanley Cup Playoffs last spring, and after recording over 100 points two seasons ago, no one could've predicted this fall off given how much talent the Swedish forward has.
Lalji doesn't believe that Pettersson's issue is the knee tendinitis,
which said he suffered back in January 2024 when speaking with reporters last May after their exit from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, adding that the Swede's problem is between his ears.
"It's baffling to me 13 months. You have to believe that part of the problem is not the knee, it's between the ears. I just have my wonders if he'll ever get it back... Will he ever be a 100-point player again?
I have big picture, long-term future questions about this player, beyond what's going to happen in these next 23 games." Lalji said.
Hypothetically speaking, if the Vancouver Canucks did decide to buyout his contract following the 2024-25 season, it would last until the end of the 2038-39 campaign,
according to PuckPedia, with the cap hit for the next 14 years being as follows:
2025-26: $9,161,905 USD.
2026-27: $2,661,905 USD.
2027-28: $4,211,905 USD.
2028-29: $6,411,905 USD.
2029-30: $9,961,905 USD.
2030-31: $9,961,905 USD.
2031-32: $9,961,905 USD.
2032-33 to 2038-39: $2,061,905 USD.
It's safe to say that for now, the Vancouver Canucks will continue to be patient with Elias Pettersson and that they locked him up for a reason, because they believe in him and his ability, so a buyout likely won't be in the cards anytime soon.
