The Canucks are well into the depth signing season, and they just confirmed the addition of a Vancouver Native Defenceman.

The Canucks announced that they had acquired, in free agency, the former Golden Knights prospect Layton Ahac.

Building out our line of defence. 🛡️

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed defenceman Layton Ahac to a one-year contract.

The 23-year-old was the Golden Knight's 3rd Round Draft Selection in 2019, but his development hasn't gone according to plan. After four seasons within the Knights' organization and only 17 points, he decided it was time for a new opportunity and chose to return closer to home.

While this may seem like a meaningless addition, since the day he was drafted, Ahac had consistently been recognized for his two-way game and his elevated IQ:

Skilled defenseman who thinks the game is at a high level and could become an NHL lifer because of his two-way style of play. His skating is the only thing holding him back, but he has much time to improve that area of his game.

- Dobber Prospect

It will be interesting to see how he develops within the Canucks' organization. At 6'02 and 205, it will be intriguing to see where he fits within the team's prospect pool, given that Akita Hirose, Christian Wolanin, D-Petey and Guillaume Brisebois are all expected to play in Abbotsford.
