The Canucks have a glaring issue in net, and it's becoming harder to ignore. Demko's inability to stay healthy over the course of a full season is a growing concern. You can't rely on a goalie who can't make it through a game multiple times in a season due to injury, and the questions surrounding his durability are only getting louder.
Elliotte Friedman recently reported that Demko might have to learn how to play through discomfort, and judging by what we heard today, that seems more and more likely. Even if Demko has a standout season, this underlying issue is going to impact how the Canucks handle him moving forward. Realistically, it's hard to see Demko getting a contract extension longer than two to three years because history has shown that goalie injuries, especially in the lower body, tend to stick around and age poorly.
Much of what happens next will depend on the development of Arturs Silovs. If Silovs can take the next step and prove he's the goalie of the future, the Canucks might be forced to make a tough decision on Demko sooner rather than later. This season could be pivotal for both of their careers-and for the team's future between the pipes.
