Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim may be subject to some major backlash as earlier comments in the year are resurfacing to prove that he does not want the Canucks being in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Vancouver Canucks fanbase is clearly devastating that their hometown team has been mathematically eliminated from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, especially with their high expectations coming into the year.
But, there is one important member of the city of Vancouver that could not be happier the team will not be making a run at the NHL's ultimate prize.

Is Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim actually happy the Vancouver Canucks missed the playoffs?

Earlier in the NHL season, Mayor Sim received lots of hate and backlash when he caused some pretty big controversy with some comments about the Canucks.
When speaking with Kenneth Chan of the Daily Hive back in November for an article on fan experiences, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim also touched on the Vancouver Canucks and gave a pretty ridiculous quote regarding the team and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In the quote, he said as a fan of the Canucks, he obviously wants them in the postseason, but as the Mayor of the city, he doesn't it due to safety concerns.
"As a fan, I want to see the Canucks have an exciting run and make it to the Stanley Cup Finals, and hopefully win in Game 7 in overtime. As the Mayor of Vancouver, I do not want them to play a single game in the playoffs because the stress that it causes for safety." Sim said.

He added, "We can handle it, but the costs, if they made another [Stanley Cup] run, the bill would be in the millions of dollars."

As the Mayor, these comments are pretty outlandish, especially considering the positive economical return and attraction that comes along with them making it.
With Vancouver's past, most notably in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final and the riots after Game 7, it's understandable to have concerns, but to voice it in a way that comes off as being unsupportive, is not a good look.
