Captain Quinn Hughes did not hold back how he felt about the Vancouver Canucks' performance this season
To say this was a difficult season for the Vancouver Canucks would be an understatement.
Canucks captain Quinn Hughes looking forward to time off after such a disappointing season to say the least.
The Canucks began the season with Stanley Cup hopes, but those ambitions quickly faded as they failed to even reach the playoffs. Their 2024-25 campaign came to a disappointing close with a 4-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 82, the final seconds ticking down on a season that fell well short of expectations.
Fans can finally turn the page on a season that left many scratching their heads.
Noah Stang from DH Sports writes that
Quinn Hughes stood out as one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing season. On many nights, he was the lone reason to tune in and watch the Canucks. But when the final buzzer marked the end of the 2024-25 campaign, Hughes wasn't ready to move past the team's shortcomings.
Here's what Hughes had to say following his team's loss to Vegas in the last game of the season.
«It's just been such a disappointing year that it's kinda like not even [looking] ahead to anything. Just gonna go home, enjoy myself, probably put my phone away and see what happens. Definitely take some time off.» -Hughes
Strang also writes that while he'll definitely take some time to rest, it likely won't be long before the Canucks' captain is back on the ice. Hughes' offseason training has become the stuff of legend, he's known for grinding through summer sessions at his home in Michigan, often training outdoors alongside his brothers and fellow NHL stars like
Macklin Celebrini and
Roman Josi.
"Just a few years ago, Hughes' shot was considered a weakness. Over the course of a few summers, he's transformed it into a strength, and he's scored 33 goals across the past two seasons." -Strang
Despite a season full of standout moments for Hughes, there was one milestone he narrowly missed. He tied the Canucks' all-time franchise record for points by a defenceman but came up just short of breaking it, unable to register a point in the final game against the Golden Knights. It wasn't due to a lack of effort, he came out flying, but that elusive final point just wouldn't come.
«It wasn't my number one focal point. It would've just been a nice milestone. As far as some of the other things that happened here, I think that's more on my mind, where that's more upsetting, some other things than that record.» -Hughes
It's only a matter of time before Hughes claims that record as his own. But for now, his focus shifts to the offseason-a crucial summer where he'll no doubt be putting in the work to help ensure the Canucks are back in the playoff hunt next year.
