As the jury is still out on if the Vancouver Canucks made a big mistake in trading away J.T. Miller instead of Elias Pettersson, the first stretch of games is swaying the side of being a costly backfire for the Canucks.

After the well-documented rift and drama that took place between J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson which caused a major distraction for the entire organization this season, Patrik Allvin and the team decided it was best to move on from Miller.
They ended up trading Miller to the New York Rangers for a 1st-round pick, prospect Victor Mancini and Filip Chytil, which turned to be a good deal, but it begs the question if the team got rid of the wrong player.

Did the Vancouver Canucks make a mistake trading J.T. Miller instead of Elias Pettersson?

It is was made clear from the beginning that Elias Pettersson was going to be under the microscope when Miller left, and it is proving quickly that he is not performing any better without him around.
He even made some recent comments that show he is not dealing with the scrutiny well, showing his issues with the media instead of taking accountability for his lackluster play.
It makes even less sense as they have every right to be on him for his lack of production when he makes $11.6 million a season.
Pettersson was asked if confidence has played a factor in him not being able to find the back of the net this season and he gave a pretty lousy answer.

"It's more annoying dealing with the media." Pettersson said according to Sportsnet's Iain MacIntyre.

The fact of the matter is, there was an ongoing debate for months if they should trade either the older more reliable forward in Miller or trade the younger more promising Elias Pettersson, and the numbers showcase their decision has backfired.
In 6 games since the trade, Pettersson has just one assist, but his advanced stats tell an even bigger story.
One shot type with Pettersson that dropped significantly is the one-timer. Not taking nearly as many and hitting the net on lower percentage.
On the flip side, Miller is excelling with the Rangers, scoring above a point-per-game and leading the team in goals since coming over to the Big Apple.
J.T. Miller since coming to the Rangers:

8 games
- 5 goals (1st on Rangers)
- 9 points
- 4 powerplay points (1st on Rangers)
- 29 hits (3rd on Rangers)
Obviously the trade is still fresh and a lot more time will have to pass in order to actually see which team won the trade, but the Rangers a clear favorite right now.
