Former Vancouver Canucks defenceman Randy Gregg is set to be honoured by the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night.

It's going to be a night of celebration in Edmonton on Friday as the team hosts Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins at Rogers Place. Tomorrow night, the Edmonton Oilers are set to honour their two newest members of their Hall of Fame - former Vancouver Canucks defenceman Randy Gregg and Craig MacTavish.

Gregg and MacTavish will become the 15th and 16th members of the Edmonton Oilers Hall of Fame. Randy Gregg recently spoke to Jim Matheson of The Edmonton Journal where he said he feels honoured to be joining the Oilers' Hall of Fame. He admitted that it feels a bit odd because defensive defencemen aren't usually put in a Hall of Fame.

"It certainly is an honour but I'm a little hesitant (being saluted) because defensive defencemen shouldn't be on a Wall of Fame," Gregg said. "The role of a defensive defencemen is never to be seen. The only time you get seen is when you make a mistake. I understand the role of a defensive defenceman to winning but individual accolades are more for fantastic goaltenders or goal-scorers."

Gregg, 68, began his National Hockey League career in the 1982 Stanley Cup Playoffs after being offered a contract to join the Edmonton Oilers following two seasons in Japan with Kokudo Keikaku. Gregg would go on to spend parts of nine seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, winning the Stanley Cup five times.

In 1990, Gregg was claimed by the Vancouver Canucks in the now-defunct NHL Waiver Draft, but decided to hang up the skates for the second time in his career. After spending the 1990-91 campaign on the sidelines, Gregg decided to return to professional hockey, signing a contract with the Canucks ahead of the 1991-92 season. The Edmonton native appeared in 21 games for the Canucks that year where he had five points and 24 penalty minutes.

After the 1991-92 season, Gregg retired for the third and final time. He would completed his residency at the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and to this day, is still a family physician.

Everyone here at Canucks Daily sends a big congratulations to Randy Gregg on this amazing honour. For fans wishing to watch Gregg be inducted into the Oilers Hall of Fame, the ceremony will be shown on Sportsnet One starting at 6 pm PT tomorrow night.
