When the puck dropped all the way back in October, expectations were set sky high for Elias Pettersson amid his new contract and so far, it's been a rough season for the Swedish forward.

Elias Pettersson's name was circulating in trade rumors for a number of weeks amid a reported feud with J.T. Miller and after the latter was dealt to the New York Rangers, things cooled down on that front for the Swede, with him no longer on the trade block, according to reports.

Jannik Hansen very critical of Elias Pettersson's play this season

Former Vancouver Canucks forward Jannik Hansen was a guest on Donnie & Dhali on Wednesday where he shared his thoughts on Elias Pettersson's play so far this season.
Jansen pointed to the fact that Elias Pettersson's annual salary is in the same range of what NHL points leader Nathan MacKinnon is earning and his production is not good enough.
"Yeah that's tough to watch because again, that's where he's getting paid. He's getting paid to play like MacKinnon and he's not. You were mentioning they [MacKinnon, Makar, Necas] were dangerous all night and I saw that too, I think everybody saw that. That's what you're hoping for from Pettersson because if he finds that form he had, that's a long time ago, it's a year ago that he played at that level, then this team is a whole other conversation. So it's frustrating because he's such an integral part of this team. You need your number one center, you need your highest paid player to perform and right now that's missing." Hansen said.

Hansen went on to say that they need to have Elias Pettersson be more engaged on a nightly basis and show that he cares because at times, it doesn't look like his effort level is there.
"It just adds on top that you're moving J.T. [Miller], that was kind of playing up to his standards, yeah his production could be a little bit better, but at least you could see that he was there, he was engaged, he was intense. It looked like he cared what happened. Sometimes that's missing with Petey. I know they're two different personalities, two different types of players, but when players aren't performing, at least show me that you care. Go out there and run somebody. Do something that's within your control. You can't control bounces, you can't control whether or not you're scoring on your scoring chances, but look like you're working your tail off to get back to where we feel you should be." Hansen said.

Pettersson, 26, has registered 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists), 12 penalty minutes and is a minus-four in 47 games this season for the Vancouver Canucks.
There's still plenty of time for Elias Pettersson to turn things around, but if the Vancouver Canucks want to go on a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season, they'll need him to be at the top of his game each and every night.
