Former Vancouver Canucks forward and Stanley Cup Champion with the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers, Esa Tikkanen has been sentenced to one year of suspended jail time.

Although known for winning the games greatest prize with the Oilers and Rangers, Tikkanen had 2 season tenure with the Vancouver Canucks, scoring 25 goals and 39 assists for 64 points.

Playing 877 games in the NHL with 7 different clubs, Esa Tikkanen was once celebrated as one of the games most versatile and relentless forwards, this hockey legend is now facing a slew of legal troubles for failing to declare a considerable amount of his income to the Finland government.

Former Vancouver Canucks Forward Esa Tikkanen Sentenced to Suspended Jail Time

As stated earlier, the District Court of Western Uusimaa has decided to sentence Esa Tikkanen to one-year of suspended imprisonment for aggravated tax fraud.

It would appear that for the years 2014-2018, Tikkanen did not report about 410,000 euros of his income derived from abroad. Of the mentioned sum, more than 165,000 euros of taxes were managed to be evaded by him.

He has come out to deny all accusations that he had any criminal intent, but did admit that he did not declare his income during this period of time, which makes him accountable for these legal issues he now faces.

He wants to make things right by paying back the overdue payments that he owes, but the court has decided against any ruling of negligence and has assessed that the successive years of missed payments constituted fraud and, therefore could not be punished with a mere suspended sentence.
