Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin has set the new National Hockey League goals record on Sunday against the New York Islanders.
Hockey fans across the globe were ecstatic to see Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin
tie Wayne Gretzky's record on Friday night with a multi-goal effort against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Entering Sunday afternoon's game against the New York Islanders, Alexander Ovechkin needed just one goal to set a new National Hockey League record and he did just that.
Alexander Ovechkin sits atop NHL goal scoring list
Nearly 20 years after making his National Hockey League debut, Alexander Ovechkin - the future first ballot Hall of Famer, is now the all-time leading goal scorer after registering his 895th today.
The 39-year-old has been one of the faces of hockey over the last two decades since he was drafted by the Washington Capitals first overall in 2004.
As he entered the National Hockey League, everyone knew the talent that Alexander Ovechkin had and he proved that in the Russian Super League and on the international stage before making the jump to North America, but likely no one could've expected this.
Eight 50+ goal seasons and nine Rocket Richard Trophy's later, Alexander Ovechkin stands atop the National Hockey League's goals list and the next number he'll be chasing is 900.
Ovechkin, a native Moscow, Russia, has one year remaining on his current contract with the Washington Capitals and while no one knows what his plans are in the summer of 2026, it would be great to see him get to at least 950 before the end of next season.
From everyone here at Canucks Daily, we'd like to send a big congratulations to Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin on his massive accomplishment.
