The Vancouver Canucks fell 5-4 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a rollercoaster of a game on Wednesday night.

After finding themselves down 5-1 midway through the second period, the team battled back, showing resilience that left head coach Rick Tocchet with some bright spots despite the loss.

Postgame, Tocchet didn't mince words about the Canucks' early struggles.

«The first period, we gifted them goals,» he admitted. «But obviously, I liked the fight to come back. We didn't hang our head. I like to see that from our team.»

That fight included three unanswered goals, nearly tying the game in the dying moments of regulation.

The comeback effort highlighted the Canucks' potential to rebound from adversity, but it also underscored the inconsistency that has plagued their play.

One of the biggest storylines was the performance of goaltender Arturs Silovs.

When asked about the young netminder's struggles, Tocchet was candid:

«He's struggling. He's gotta get bigger in the net and battle. It's the NHL; it is what it is. When you don't have confidence, you sink into your own net.»

Silovs allowed some soft goals, but the team in front of him didn't do him any favors.

A lack of energy and defensive breakdowns left the Canucks chasing the game early. This inconsistency was particularly glaring coming off their hard-fought 2-0 win in Boston the previous night.

That victory was largely credited to the stellar play of Kevin Lankinen, who masked a subpar team performance with timely saves.

The Canucks' effort against Pittsburgh showed glimpses of their potential but also raised questions about their ability to maintain focus and consistency.

They've proven they can battle back, but they'll need to find ways to play a full 60 minutes if they want to turn these close losses into wins, especially against a bottom of the barrel team like Pittsburgh.

With a few days to regroup before their next game, the Canucks have a chance to clean up their mistakes and build on the positives.

For now, the fight is there, but the details need work.
