Insider confirms Canucks' plan regarding Thatcher Demko and the season opener
An insider has confirmed that the Vancouver Canucks want to bring in a goaltender for training camp, which begins next week.
The Vancouver Canucks are set to open up training camp in just over a week and with the status of Thatcher Demko still up in the air, along with a minor injury to Arturs Silovs, which the team isn't too concerned about, General Manager Patrik Allvin is evaluating his options on the free agent market.
The Canucks have been linked to a pair of goaltenders in recent weeks including Antti Raanta and Kevin Lankinen, the latter of whom they made a contract offer to.
This week, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman was a guest on Donnie & Dhali where he confirmed that the Vancouver Canucks would like to add a goaltender to the roster before training camp starts. Friedman also gave an update on Kevin Lankinen, who may be waiting things out for potentially a better deal and opportunity.
"I do...I do think the Canucks would like that. Number one, it increases competition, number two Rick, it gives you a safety blanket." Friedman said.
He added, "I think with Lankinen, one of the things you do when you're in his situation is you wait to see if something develops late. Is there another situation in the league that you think a goalie shows up injured or something happens where you think you have a better opportunity or could sign a better deal. I don't think Lankinen is disinterested in the Canucks, I just think at this point in time it would be he wants to wait as long as he's comfortable to see what opportunities are out there."
"I do think you're going to look to go out and get someone else whether it's a PTO or a contract"
Given that the Canucks open training camp in nine days, they'll have to act pretty quickly if they want to bring someone in, whether it be a PTO or guaranteed contract. Other than Kevin Lankinen and Antti Raanta, some other possibilities for the Canucks include Aaron Dell, Keith Kinkaid and Martin Jones.
