On Wednesday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman was a guest on 'The Jeff Marek Show' and said that while he never says in this situation, he believes that the Canucks are moving on from Elias Lindholm and won't be re-signing him before July 1st, when the market opens.
From the moment the Canucks acquired him, there was a pretty good chance this scenario would play out. It doesn't make much sense to go more than $7 million AAV on a new contract with Elias Lindholm, which he's reportedly turned down and is seeking more money. The Canucks could use that money in other areas of need, including a top-six winger and on the blue line to re-sign Zadorov and Myers or someone on the free agent market.
Patrik Allvin paid a hefty price to acquire Lindholm back in January. Their package included Andrei Kuzmenko, who needed a fresh start elsewhere, along with prospect Hunter Brzustewicz, a 2024 first-round pick, and other assets. Given the amount they gave up, it's understandable if fans are frustrated that Lindholm won't be returning to the organization next season.
Lindholm, a native of Boden, Sweden, didn't have a great regular season with the Canucks, putting up 12 points (six goals, six assists) in 26 games, but took his game to the next level in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, recording ten points (five goals, five assists) in 13 contests.
