For the Vancouver Canucks, who are firmly in first place in the Pacific Division, they've done quite a bit of buying this season, with adding Nikita Zadorov and Elias Lindholm. But you can never have too much depth in the National Hockey League and there's no doubt the Canucks would still like to make an addition or two before the deadline.
The most likely move coming for the Canucks would be adding on the blue line, but there's a chance they may be priced out of the rental defenceman market.
According to David Pagnotta, the asking price for defencemen like Chris Tanev, Sean Walker and Matt Dumba is a first-round pick. The Canucks don't have a first-round pick in 2024 and didn't want to move their 2025 selection, so this could make things tricky.
A first-round pick for a rental player, regardless of what position they play, is always a hefty price to pay in a trade and with the Canucks already moving one this season in the Elias Lindholm deal, it's highly unlikely they've trade another one.
Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin will either have to wait for the price to come down closer to the deadline or turn his attention elsewhere as there won't be a shortage of depth defenceman available for much less.
