A new development has emerged by NHL insiders like Pierre LeBrun indicating that there i strong strong possibility that Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet leaves the organization in order to replace John Tortorella as the next Philadelphia Flyers head coach.
Early Thursday morning, after a very disappointing 2024-2025 season, the Philadelphia Flyers and head coach John Tortorella decided to parts ways after the better part of 3 seasons.
"Today I made the very difficult decision to move on from John as our head coach," general manager Daniel Briere said in a statement. "John played a vital role in our rebuild. He set a standard of play and re-established what it means to be a Philadelphia Flyer.
NHL insider speculate Rick Tocchet may replace John Tortorella as the Philadelphia Flyers head coach
After Tortorella's firing, insiders immediately starting speculating that Tocchet, who spent 11 seasons with the Flyers as a player, would be the perfect fit as the next head coach.
The Flyers clearly need a fresh voice and system in that locker room and there is none better than Tocchet who won Jack Adams Award last season after the Canucks finished atop
the Pacific Division with a 50-23-9 record.
Although they are fighting for their lives right now, the Vancouver Canucks 2024-2025 season has been major let down after the year they had last season.
The real speculation began when Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin voiced his desire to sign Rick Tocchet long-term, but was quickly shut down as the head coach has decided to weigh his options in the offseason.
«What I really like is his ability to communicate with people,» Allvin said of Tocchet in an interview with LeBrun in The Athletic last week(opens in a new tab). «The hours he puts in there, to having individual meetings with players, I think that's paying off.
«And part of it was I felt we needed that accountability and credibility with guys who have done it, like Tocchet, Footer (Adam Foote) and (Sergei) Gonchar, they all won Cups.»
Although all speculation t this point, one thing is for certain is that Tocchet is a prime head coach that teams will certainly be lining up to try and snag, and Philly is one of them.
"I have zero doubt that Rick Tocchet is atop the Flyers wish list," Penguins writer Josh Yohe of The Athletic wrote on X. "Would be in the best interest of Penguins fans if GMJR (Canucks president Jim Rutherford) were to keep him in Vancouver for a while longer.
It has been a hard season for mor reason than one, and of the Canucks end up not making the Stanley Cup Playoff's, there is a solid chance that this is the last stretch of games with hi, behind the bench.
