New Professional Hockey Team Officially Coming to Vancouver In 2025-2026
Vancouver, British Columbia is reportedly set to welcome a new professional hockey team to the city that may begin play as early as this fall.
Professional hockey has always had a home in the city of Vancouver date back to the early 1900s with the Stanley Cup being won by the Millionaires in 1915, two years before the NHL formed.
Last year, Vancouver
was supposed to be the home of a new professional hockey team in a league called "3HL", but plans were scrapped just months later and now, it looks like there will indeed be a pro team coming to the city that'll belong to an already established league.
Vancouver to reportedly land PWHL expansion franchise
On Thursday afternoon, reports circulated that the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL), who has been looking into expansion since the start of their second season last fall, will be putting a team in Vancouver, British Columbia.
"We're continuing to finalize decisions related to expansion and look forward to sharing more details soon," a PWHL spokesperson
told Hailey Salvian of The Athletic yesterday.
It appears that the new PWHL team in Vancouver will begin play this fall for the league's third season and will host their games at Pacific Coliseum, which was once home to the Canucks from 1970 to 1995.
"A source confirmed earlier this week that the Professional Women's Hockey League would soon be announcing an expansion team in Vancouver, likely to play at the Pacific Coliseum."
Patrick Johnston of The Province said.
Earlier this year, Rogers Arena played host to a PWHL neutral site game as part of their Takeover Tour, which was more than likely being used to gauge interest for future expansion.
Vancouver's game was played back on January 8th between the Montreal Victoire and Toronto Sceptres in front of a sold-out crowd of 19,038 fans. Montreal defeated Toronto 4-2 thanks to a pair of goals from Canadian women's national team captain Marie-Philip Poulin.
The city of Vancouver is no stranger to women's hockey with the Vancouver Amazons forming back in the 1920s where they played in tournaments in the province and from 2000 to 2003, the Vancouver Griffins were members of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), which ceased operations in 2007.
Perhaps for Vancouver's Professional Women's Hockey team, we'll see them try and incorporate elements of those former teams that helped pave the way for the current generation.
