NHL issues a statement on Canucks captain Quinn Hughes
Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes played a key role in the team's 2-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday night and continues to solidify himself as one of the best defencemen in the history of the franchise.
During Wednesday's game, Quinn Hughes picked up a pair of points - one goal, one assist - to help the Vancouver Canucks win their 47th game of the 2023-24 season. In doing so, Hughes put himself into some elite company in franchise history in a pair of categories.
With his goal, Hughes now sits tied for fifth for most goals by a defenceman in a single season in Canucks history. The current franchise record is currently held by Adrian Aucoin, who had 23 during the 1998-99 season.
"Quinn Hughes scored his 16th goal of 2023-24 to climb a @Canucks franchise list."
In the third period, Quinn Hughes assisted on Conor Garland's goal, which stood as the game-winner. That assist would be Hughes' 70th of the season, making him only the second to reach that mark in a single season in Canucks history, the other being Henrik Sedin who did the same three times in his career.
"Quinn Hughes became the second player in @Canucks history to post 70 assists in a season, joining Henrik Sedin (3x)."
"Quinn Hughes is the fourth different U.S.-born defenceman in NHL history to post 70 assists in a season. He joined Brian Leetch (3x), Phil Housley (79 in 1992-93) and Gary Suter (70 in 1987-88)."
It's been a solid season for Quinn Hughes and he's set new career-highs in goals, assists and points, as well as most points by a defenceman in a single season in Canucks, passing the mark he set last year. In 76 games this season, Hughes has 86 points (16 goals, 70 assists), 38 penalty minutes and is a plus-39.
