After weeks of rumors surrounding the Columbus Blue Jackets actively shopping prospect defenseman David Jiricek, the news broke that they officially sent him over to the Minnesota Wild, ending all chances for the Canucks to land their guy.
There were a ton of chatter surrounding the Vancouver Canucks being a top contender for Jiricek.
Early on, it was made known by NHL insider and Daily Faceoff reporter Frank Seravalli that that the Canucks were out out of the running.
It was made known that the Canucks would not be parting way with top defense prospect Tom Willander who currently plays for Boston University of the NCAA.
But, the new news dropped that shows the Canucks could still probably have landed Jiricek and also keep Willander... But how?
If we consider who the Minnesota Wild gave up for Jiricek, then we can easily conclude what the Canucks could have given up in exchange, and it would not have been Willander.
The Columbus Blue Jackets received Daemon Hunt, and the Canucks currently have a defenseman in the AHL who fits a similar mold but who is actually putting more points than Hunt.
Elias Pettersson, not the superstar forward, but the 20-year-old prospect in Abbotsford. He is younger, put up more points past season and seems to have a much greater upside to that of Daemon Hunt.
The only issue is that the Canucks would have to give up at least two high draft picks for a deal to get done, and it seems likely that they did not want to part ways with that may future assets.
When Filip Hronek returns, the Canucks are just one d-man upgrade away from being serious contenders, but they will have to wait a little while longer to find the right fit.
