Reporter believes the Vancouver Canucks could have Thatcher Demko on their season-opening roster, however it might not be for very long.

Thatcher Demko isn't expected to be between the pipes for the Vancouver Canucks anytime soon given that he's still recovering from an injury, which is believed to be to his Popliteus, a muscle that is behind the back of the knee, attached to the femur and tibia.

Because of Demko's injury and uncertain timeline for a return to game action, the Canucks went out and signed free agent goaltender Kevin Lankinen to a one-year contract worth $875,000.

While it's still early in training camp and Vancouver only plays their first preseason game tonight, Stephan Roget of Canucks Army took a look at what the team's opening night roster could look like and he believes it could include Thatcher Demko.

Roget shared that for salary cap reasons, when the Vancouver Canucks submit their roster to the NHL's registry office on October 8th before 5 pm ET, the team's goaltenders may be Thatcher Demko and Kevin Lankinen. Roget added that because he doesn't need waivers, the Canucks could "send" Arturs Silovs to Abbotsford, which would just be a paper transaction.

Once the roster is officially registered with the National Hockey League, then the Canucks would be able to make moves, Roget says. Calling up Arturs Silovs and placing Thatcher Demko on injured reserve would be the most likely move made by Patrik Allvin.

"As soon as this roster is registered with the league, the Canucks can make moves. They'd send Lekkerimäki down to Abbotsford, bring Silovs back up, and place Demko on regular IR. In swapping Lekkerimäki ($918,333) for Silovs ($850,000) they'd gain a little extra cap space, bringing them to $90,833 under the ceiling." Roget said.

We'll have to wait and see how training camp unfolds and how Thatcher Demko is feeling before opening night before the Vancouver Canucks make their decision. Ideally, they'd like to avoid using long-term injured reserve, but once they get a better understanding of Thatcher Demko's timeline, if it ends up being worst case scenario, then LTIR could become an option.
