Vancouver Canucks Reportedly Give Rick Tocchet a Strong Ultimatum with New Contract Offer
Ahead of the team's final game of the 2024-25 season, the Vancouver Canucks have reportedly made another contract offer to head coach Rick Tocchet.
We've officially made it to game 82 of the Vancouver Canucks' season and after a tough year filled with injuries, drama and inconsistent play, the team will close things out against the Vegas Golden Knights tonight at Rogers Arena.
As we enter the team's offseason starting tomorrow, the biggest piece of business Patrik Allvin will need to work on is getting Rick Tocchet locked up to an extension and a decision on his future in Vancouver
is expected to be made pretty quickly according to Elliotte Friedman.
Vancouver Canucks reportedly make contract offer to Rick Tocchet
On Wednesday's edition of Halford and Brough on Sportsnet 650 radio, the pair discussed the future of Rick Tocchet behind the bench for the Vancouver Canucks, with Jason Brough giving a positive update on contract talks between the two sides.
According to Jason Brough, the Vancouver Canucks have presented another contract offer to Rick Tocchet that they're pretty hopeful could get it done.
"I've heard that the Canucks have given Rick Tocchet an offer that they are pretty hopeful about. If you hear Rick Dhaliwal he'll be like "the Canucks know the price, the Canucks know the price" to sign Rick Tocchet or to get this deal done. I don't know if they've met that price, but I think they've given him an offer that's pretty generous their eyes and I think they probably want to get this wrapped up in the next couple of days so at the end of season presser, they can have Rick Tocchet there signed, sealed and delivered and then get on to all the other things that they have to fix." Brough said.
Brough went on to say that if the Vancouver Canucks don't have a deal in place by the team's end of season press conference, which could be either Friday or Saturday - no set date yet, that it'll become a 'big thing' for a management group that has quite of bit of work to do to fix this roster heading into the 2025-26 season.
Tocchet has had plenty of success behind the bench in Vancouver since joining the organization in January 2023 as Bruce Boudreau's replacement.
The 61-year-old led the team to a 20-12-4 record to finish out the 2022-23 season and the following year, helped them win the Pacific Division title and came within one win of their first Western Conference Final since 2010.
While this year certainly hasn't gone the way fans were hoping, the blame shouldn't be solely on Rick Tocchet, it has to be shared all around from the players and management, along with the coaching staff.
It's seems like both sides want to get a deal done to keep Rick Tocchet as the Vancouver Canucks' head coach next season and beyond, but we'll have to wait and see where things go in the coming days.
