Jesse Puljujarvi was selected 4th in the 2016 selection, prior to Matthew Tkachuk, Mikhaïl Sergachev, and Clayton Keller just to name these three. Puljujarvi failed to grow into the power forward they needed to go alongside Connor McDavid.
According to Frank Seravalli, a trade for the big winger is already in place. With the salary cap being what it is, Puljujarvi's $3M cap hit until the end of the season is certainly too much for a contending team like the Oilers, and freeing up this cap space would definitely help them improve other spheres of their lineup.
We're only four weeks away from the trade deadline and the trade hasn't been completed yet since the Oilers are waiting to see what happens with Kailer Yamamoto. The small winger has been off the lineup since January 11th, because of a concussion and he'll only be available to come back on February 12th.
Jim Rutherford specified that as part of their retool he was aiming for players in their early 20s, players who have not yet reached their full potential. Is Puljujarvi a target for Allvin and Rutherford?
The Canucks just announced that they'd moved Mikheyev from IR to LTIR freeing more than enough cap room. Puljujarvi will be a restricted free agent at the end of the campaign.
