Earlier in the week, the Blue Jackets acquired Ivan Provorov from the Philadelphia Flyers in a three-team deal involving the Los Angeles Kings and on Friday, they added Damon Severson in a sign-and-trade with the New Jersey Devils. Severson's contract is for eight-years at $6.25 million AAV.
The trades made by Jarmo Kekalainen may force the Blue Jackets to move one of their top prospects, Denton Mateychuk.
Columbus' defensive core is extremely deep now that the team has bolstered their roster with Provorov and Severson. Along with those two, the Blue Jackets have Zach Werenski, David Jiricek, Jake Bean, Erik Gudbranson, Stanislav Svozil, Samuel Knazko, Corson Ceulemans, Andrew Peeke, Adam Boqvist, Nick Blankenburg, who are all under contract for next season, meanwhile Tim Berni is set to become an RFA this summer.
With how deep the organization is on defence, it could certainly open up the possibility of the team trading a top prospect like Denton Mateychuk to a rebuilding team for a piece that could help the Blue Jackets win soon. From a Canucks standpoint, it would be interesting to see if Allvin could swing a trade with Columbus for Mateychuk, potentially involving someone like J.T. Miller.
Mateychuk has had two very strong seasons in a row in the Western Hockey League with the Moose Jaw Warriors, putting up 64 points in 65 games during the 2021-22 season and 65 points in 63 games this past campaign.
