We're moving closer to the trade deadline by the minute, and we know the Canucks have been active. As the hope of taking the team to the top grows continuously, the target they may try to fetch could be of a higher profile.

FORMER EIGHT-OVERALL SELECTION ON THE TRADE BLOCK?

The Buffalo Sabres have been struggling this year after they almost made the playoffs last year. The up-and-coming core of this franchise may be ready for a shake-up, and the Canucks could very well be benefactors of it.

The Sabres extended most of their young stars to long-term deals over the summer, but their former eight overall has yet to put his name on a new deal. After a breakout season in 2022-2023, where he collected 59 points, it seems the Sabres are still unsure they want Casey Mittlestadt to be a part of their future.

Left-handed centerman, who was viewed as an electric offensive talent when drafted in 2017, is starting to live up to the potential he showed back then. Currently pacing for 71 points, he could very well be the player the Canucks are looking for:

Carrying a $2.5M cap hit up until the end of the campaign, he'll be a restricted free agent at the end of his current deal. The Canucks will once again be looking at potential additions with lots of upside, and at 25 years of age, he might be it.

The logic would be that Tom Willander and Jonathan Lekkerimaki aren't available for trade, but the Canucks' first-round selection could very well be in play. What would you be comfortable with spending to acquire a former top-ten pick and talented point producer like Mittelstadt?
