NOW FACING A DILEMMA
Allvin's goal is obviously to build a franchise that will dominate for years to come, should he be trading for an asset with term or one who's ready to commit? Or should he be thinking about spending less and opt for a shorter term fix?
The team acquired Filip Hronek last year and paid the price, they also added Carson Soucy via free agency and they're definitely pieces that will stick with the team for the next few years. If the Canucks chose to go down the road of a dominant defender with term, the Flyers' huge left handed shot and mobile Travis Sanheim should definitely top their list of targets.
A trade proposal emerged suggesting that the Canucks would go and spend the price to acquire the prime time Defenseman from the 'rebuilding'' Flyers. Former first round pick, a 6'03'' two-way Defenseman signed for the next eight seasons for $6.25M. Here's the proposed trade:
With Garland going the other way there would be close to no impact on the team's cap. Sanheim would solidify Tocchet's defensive group for years to come and with the Canucks' recent draft picks, it could become one of the league's best as soon as next year.
Hughes - Hronek
Sanheim - Willander
Soucy - McWard/Hirose/Bear?
It sure looks like a hefty price to pay, but this would ensure the Canucks a dominant defensive core that could make them contenders for years to come based on what's left on their contracts and their age.
Through his first 18 games this season, Sanheim managed 16 points and has definitely shown how good he can be on both ends of the ice.
