Update: Boston Bruins' Charlie McAvoy Still in Hospital After Recent Diagnosis
on the status of star defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who remains in hospital as of this morning.
It was an off-day at the 4 Nations Face-Off on Tuesday, but Team USA was dealt a massive blow on the blue line
as it was announced that Charlie McAvoy was admitted to hospital in Massachusetts on Monday night.
Boston Bruins issue update on Charlie McAvoy's status
McAvoy missed Monday's game against Team Sweden due to an upper-body injury, but things appears to take a bad turn throughout the night as it was later revealed that he developed an injection relating to the UBI.
On Wednesday morning, Boston Bruins Head Team Physician Dr. Peter Asnis released a statement through the club's social media saying that Charlie McAvoy underwent a procedure after an infection was found in his right shoulder, along with a significant injury to his AC joint.
Asnis added that McAvoy underwent an irrigation and debridement procedure and remains in hospital on IV antibiotics and that the Bruins blueliner's condition is improving.
"Charlie McAvoy sustained an injury to his right shoulder acromioclavicular joint in Team USA's 4 Nations Face-Off game against Finland on February 13. He underwent treatment, which was administered by Team USA's medical staff.
Upon returning to Boston, he developed increasing pain, for which he was evaluated by the Boston Bruins' medical staff. After undergoing x-rays, MRIs, and bloodwork, he was diagnosed as having an infection in his right shoulder, as well as a significant injury to his AC joint.
He underwent an irrigation and debridement procedure at Massachusetts General Hospital on February 18. He remains in the hospital, where he is being treated with IV antibiotics, and his condition is improving." Asnis said.
Not only is this a massive blow to the United States, as McAvoy isn't able to play tomorrow against Canada, but with his status being week-to-week, this is a big loss for the Boston Bruins, who are in the thick of the wild card race in the Eastern Conference.
Without their best defenseman, the Boston Bruins are going to have a tough time down the stretch as they look to extend their Stanley Cup Playoff appearance streak to nine straight seasons.
McAvoy, a native of Long Beach, New York appeared in two games for the United States at the 4 Nations Face-Off where he was held point-less and was a plus-one.
