LATEST | Canucks commentator Ray Ferraro shares thoughts on Elias Pettersson
After a four-point performance on Wednesday night, Canucks fans are excited to see what Elias Pettersson has for an encore on Saturday in Edmonton against the Oilers.
Petterssson is poised for another great season, after putting up 102 points last year, many expect him to his the century mark once again, which could put him at nearly $11 million AAV on his next contract.
As everyone knows by now, the 24-year-old is in the final year of his current deal and will become a restricted free agent at season's end. Pettersson became eligible to sign an extension back on July 1st, but both sides have decided to hold off and wait on putting pen to paper on a new deal.
While on TSN radio on Friday, new Canucks colour commentator Ray Ferraro gave his thoughts on Elias Pettersson and his contract situation, saying it's definitely a smart move to wait and see where the team is at after the season before signing a new contract with the franchise.
"There's not 10 C's in the league I would in front of himif Pettersson wants to wait & see how the team is gonna do, I think it's a smart move.if things go way south & they're going to have to really rebuild things, why would he want to sign there?" Ferraro said.
It's certainly going to be interesting to see where things go in terms of a contract extension with Elias Pettersson. For now, both him and the Canucks are focused on the 2023-24 season and getting the team back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2020.
There are certainly a few different ways the Canucks and Pettersson could go about an extension. They could opt for a deal in the 2-4 year range, which would probably be Pettersson's preference in order to maximize on the money he could earn when he eventually becomes an unrestricted free agent. But for the Canucks, they'd probably like to get him inked to a seven or eight-year contract and keep him as one of the core pieces of the organization.
Pettersson and the Canucks will hit the ice at Rogers Place in Edmonton for their first Hockey Night in Canada game of the 2023-24 season tonight. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET and can be viewed across the country on Sportsnet.
