LATEST | Could Jack Rathbone be on his way out? Taking into consideration by an Eastern team
Jack Rathbone was once a highly-touted prospect in the Vancouver Canucks organization. Still, due to injuries and, at times, performance issues, he hasn't been able to become a full-time National Hockey League player.
The 24-year-old has been surpassed on the depth chart in the organization by others and is no longer one of the team's best prospects on the blue line. But could his time with the Canucks organization be coming to a close?
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the relationship between the Canucks and Rathbone is slowly deteriorating, which is understandable, and he thinks he, the Boston native, could ask for a trade, something he's considered doing in the past.
"I think it's a bit of a shame because I thought for a time ago that was a perfect marriage, the Canucks and Rathbone. It's been slowly deteriorating," said Friedman.
He added, "I think that there were times that Rathbone considered asking for a trade but never did. But I've got to think now I wouldn't be surprised if that comes up. Just another chance in another organization."
Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey Now thinks the Bruins should bring Rathbone home and give him a fresh start in their organization. Murphy believes that if the Bruins can clear some cap space by trading either Matt Grzelcyk or Derek Forbort, that could open up a spot for Rathbone on Boston's blue line.
Rathbone appeared in 37 games last season with AHL Abbotsford, where he put up 14 points, a significant decrease from the 40 points in 39 games he had during the 2021-22 season. He also got into 11 games with the Canucks, recording two points (one goal, one assist), two penalty minutes and was a minus-one.
