LATEST | Insider provides update on Elias Pettersson contract negotiations
Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson is having a great start to the season and it's turned everyone's attention away from his contract status, for now, as he's set to become a restricted free agent next summer.
Before the season began, Pettersson wanted to put contract talks on hold in order to prepare for the start of the new campaign and in doing so, he's been able to produce on the ice at an impressive pace, putting up 28 points in the team's first 19 games.
On Wednesday, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period provided an update on contract talks between Elias Pettersson's camp and the Vancouver Canucks.
"Things are going swimmingly in Vancouver and fans will be even more excited once Pettersson puts pen to paper. However, given his RFA position, the sense of urgency does not need to be very high right now. Pettersson's agents at CAA can focus on contract talks while he remains zoned in on the ice. But his price tag is jumping, probably more than Nylander's, and according to a well-placed source close to the situation, there haven't been any recent meaningful contract discussions between the two sides." Pagnotta said.
While it's still a little concerning that the Canucks and Pettersson's camp haven't had any meaningful contract discussions over the last little while, it's not too shocking, especially that both parties are just focused on this season right now. Pettersson will eventually put pen to paper, whether that's in a month, two months, three months or at the end of the 2023-24 season and it's very likely going to be the largest contract in Vancouver Canucks history.
