LATEST | New development in the Conor Garland trade talks: Canucks are all-in for this trade
On Tuesday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the Vancouver Canucks have given permission to Conor Garland and his new agent to talk with other teams about a potential trade.
Ideally, the Canucks would like to get his entire cap hit of $4.95 million for the next three seasons off books, but in his most recent 32 Thoughts article, Friedman added that the organization is open to retaining some of Garland's salary.
"As reported Tuesday, Vancouver's given Conor Garland's new agent permission to talk to teams. His contract (three more years at a $4.95M AAV) remains a challenge, and the Canucks certainly tried to move him before. They are prepared to keep some salary. This doesn't always work, but there are times it can including one prominent BC example: Roberto Luongo. It was an agent change that breathed new life into trade discussions with Florida, before Canucks/Panthers executives hammered out the particulars." Friedman said.
Having dead salary on the books for the next three seasons is not something the Canucks would like to do, especially as they enter their competitive window, but if it's the only way to trade Conor Garland, they may have no choice.
The Canucks already have some dead salary against their cap this season in the way of Oliver Ekman-Larsson's buyout, which they'll be paying for the next six seasons, with them owing the Swedish blueliner $4.766 million in 2025-26 and 2026-27.
