The Vancouver Canucks will open the 2023-24 season tonight against the Edmonton Oilers, but they'll take to the ice without one of their big free-agent signings, Carson Soucy.

Soucy suffered a lower-body injury during the Canucks' final preseason game on Friday against Calgary after getting tangled up along the boards in his zone late in the second period. He returned to the bench briefly before heading down the tunnel and being deemed out for the remainder of the game.

In the days following Soucy's injury, the Canucks learned of the severity after he had an MRI, and it was determined that he would be out week-to-week.

Soucy's absence leaves a big hole on the blue line in Vancouver, and according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Canucks are beginning to look at what defensive options are out there.

"3. Carson Soucy's injury has the Canucks peeking at defence options." Friedman said.

One team the Canucks could talk to is the Columbus Blue Jackets, who, on Tuesday, were reported as wanting to move a defenceman. The Blue Jackets have plenty of options on the blue line, and one name mentioned is 25-year-old Jake Bean, who's in the final year of his contract at $2.3 million and will become a restricted free agent next summer.
