The return of NBA basketball to Vancouver might be a matter of when, not if.

On Monday night's Knicks vs Celtics broadcast, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was asked about the potential of additional Canadian markets in the league.

Speaking specifically about Vancouver, who were home to the Grizzlies from 1995-2001, Silver said the city had become a great basketball market and left the possibility of northern expansion beyond Toronto as very open.

I know there's interest from Montreal... there's still ongoing interest from Vancouver,
Silver said.
There will be more opportunity there over time.

This isn't the first mention of more Canadian teams in the NBA from Silver, who 4 years ago said he wishes there was still a team in Vancouver.

The commissioner has taken notice of the rise in popularity of basketball in Canada, noting the increase in Canadian NBA players (a record 27 on NBA rosters this season).

It's expected to take at least a few more years if the NBA pursues Canadian expansion, but the Vancouver Canucks may have to start making space at Rogers Arena for a new roommate.
