Former Canuck first rounder Cody Hodgson wants to make a return to professional hockey after nearly a decade away.

Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday night that the 33 year old, who retired in 2016 after being diagnosed with a rare muscle disorder called malignant hyperthermia.

He says Hodgson is skating again after being a clean bill of health last summer, with hopes of returning to the game.

He understands he's not starting in the NHL, he knows nothing is guaranteed, but he'd like to resume his career and he's looking for an opportunity,
Friedman said.

Hodgson was a highly touted prospect for the Canucks after being drafted in 2008, he played parts of two seasons with the team before being dealt to Buffalo for Zack Kassian.

He showed promise with the Sabres, scoring 78 points in 120 games the two seasons following the trade before his diagnosis began to impact his career.

He has played in 326 NHL games total, and hopes to add more.
