It caused a reaction chain within the organization's coaching depth chart that left a void with the Abbotsford Canucks staff on Manny Malhotra's side.
As it was revealed in a previous piece,Justin Pogge was viewed as the next man up for the job. The team issued a formal announcement confirming their latest addition.
The former professional netminder spent his North American career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, starting on seven occasions in 08-09. He retired in 2022-2023 after a season with the Wolfsburg Grizzly Adams of Germany's top hockey league, the DEL.
While Pogge will most likely not work with the team's top guns like Thatcher Demko or Arturs Silovs, he'll have a chance to work with the team's rising stars, Nikita Tolopilo and Jonathan Lemieux, their goaltending prospects, and their latest acquisition via free agency, Jiri Patera.
The Canucks goaltending musical chair game is far from done; there still hasn't been a formal announcement or a proper timeline on Thatcher Demko. It's clear that he's injured now, but will he be with the team for training camp? For the home opener? Or in 2024 at all? Nobody seems to know the answer to that one. In the meantime, let's hope that Pogge has some magic to teach the youngsters so they can guard the Canucks' cages during the Vezina nominee's absence.
