The Vancouver Canucks have announced today that they will be healthy scratching defenseman Vincent Desharnais from tonight's lineup against the Philadelphia Flyers. This comes just one game after signing his 2-year/$4 million contract...

#Canucks are sitting Vincent Desharnais as a healthy scratch just one game after signing him to a two-year/$4 million contract this summer.

It may not come to much of the surprise about his removal from the lineup as Desharnais and Derek Forbert were both slotted in on the 3rd pairing in the season opener and played below par. Vancouver took a 4-1 lead against the Calgary Flames into the second period but it did not take too long for the wheels to fall off.

Desharnais and Forbert found themselves in the gutter of criticism after the Flames' second and third goals of the night were scored when they were on the ice.

Per Canucks Army:

«The bottom four defence were bad, Desharnais and Forbort were on the ice for two goals against, and their breakouts were sloppy. Overall, the team was leaky, whether in the slot, off the cycle, or defending the rush. Part of it is early-season hockey, but I wonder if, as a big-picture takeaway, trying to push up the ice to use your forwards' speed makes you more vulnerable defensively off the rush.»

Head Coach Rick Tocchet comments on scratching Vincent Desharnais

The first practice after their loss to the Flames, the coaching staff replaced Desharnais on the third pairing by Noah Juulsen. After practice, Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet commented on his reasoning behind scratching Vinny.

«If Vinny sits out some games, he's going to work with our guys,» he said. «It worked with (Nils Hoglander), it worked with Dakota (Joshua).

«You can't be afraid to have that [ability to sit players to help them work on their games]. Juulsen could come in tomorrow or the next game and we can have a little bit of a rotation and guys can work with the coaches. I think that's important.»
