Alex Edler looks back on his 15-year career with the Vancouver Canucks

Edler has arrived back in Vancouver to look back on his time with team and the memories of the city that he called home for the majority of his professional career. He stated that he loved his time here and wanted to thank the fans for all of the love and support that they have given him. He gave credit to the leaders and mentors for when he was young who helped him realize what it meant to play in this city.

«I could take a step back and see the bigger picture,» said Edler about what it meant to grow into adulthood in Vancouver. «I had such good leaders like Markus Naslund, Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Trevor Linden and Mattias Ohlund. Just being able to have them there and just hang around them and learn from them was huge for me. And then, as I got older, I met my future wife here and we had two kids.»

He sat down with Rinkside Reporter Olivia McDonald to discuss his retirement and his his love for the city of Vancouver.

"This organization has meant so much to me. I was here for so long. I made so many memories and so many friends. When they offered to do this for me I felt very honoured."

Alex Edler Thanks the Vancouver Fans

One of Edler's favorite memories that really solidified how passionate the fans of Vancouver are is how they supported the team when the Canucks made their run to the Stanley Cup in 2010-2011.

«We were a good team, and going into the playoffs, because we lost against Chicago two years in a row before that, and having them in the first round, it was an intense challenge. I think we were the better team, but Chicago won three cups in a short amount of time. So, they had a team that knew how to win,» said Edler.

«Playing them in the first round, when we beat them, we gained a lot of confidence. It was such a great feeling. It was playoff hockey, which is the most fun hockey, and then in the city, there were fans everywhere. So many flags and jerseys everywhere you went. You could really feel that you had the entire city behind you.»

Everyone here at Canucks Daily want to wish Alex Edler on a happy and well deserved retirement. We look forward to what the team has in store for his celebration tonight when he Canucks take on the Flyers.
