With the recent announcement that Jagr plans to retire as a player after the 2024-25 season, Tocchet seems to have his sights on his former teammate for a potential off-ice role in Vancouver. Speaking to the media at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton on Thursday, the reigning Jack Adams Award winner commented on the 52-year-old Jagr's decision to finally hang up his skates, suggesting the possibility of bringing him aboard as a consultant.
Jaromir Jagr never suited up for the Canucks during his illustrious NHL career, but he did spend a brief stint in Canada, playing 22 games with the Calgary Flames during the 2017-18 season. After returning to Czechia in 2018, Jagr became a player-owner with the Kladno Knights, helping the team earn promotion to the top-tier Czech Extraliga while continuing to play sporadically. The 6'3″ winger will turn 53 in February.
Jagr, who captained both the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers, had his iconic No. 68 retired by the Penguins midway through the 2023-24 season. He won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in his first two NHL seasons and led the Czech Republic to Olympic gold in 1998.
Selected fifth overall by Pittsburgh in the 1990 NHL Draft, Jagr went on to play 1,733 NHL games with the Penguins, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, and Flames. He tallied 766 goals and 1,921 points, adding 78 goals and 201 points in 208 playoff games.
