Canucks to sign defenseman Alex Edler: The team makes an announcement
The Vancouver Canucks will pay tribute to one of their all-time greats, Alex Edler, by signing him to a 1-day contract, allowing him to retire as a Canuck on October 11th in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Edler, who played 925 of his 1,030 NHL games throughout 15 seasons with the Canucks, will close out a stellar career that saw him rack up 439 points.
Fans will fondly remember Edler as a cornerstone of the Canucks' defense during their 2011 Stanley Cup Final run, where he contributed 11 points in 25 playoff games. Known for his calm and steady presence on the blue line, Edler was often considered underrated, quietly going about his job and letting his play speak for itself. Yet, when needed, he could provide a little offensive spark, a trait that made him so valuable to the team over the years.
More than just his on-ice contributions, Edler was a respected leader in the locker room and a fan favorite for his loyalty and dedication to the city of Vancouver. For fans, the chance to give him a proper send-off at Rogers Arena is a perfect way to celebrate a player who gave so much to the franchise. Edler's ability to balance offensive production with defensive dependability made him a complete player, and his contributions to the team will be remembered long after his skates are hung up.
