The Vancouver Canucks acquired a first-round pick on Friday night as part of the J.T. Miller trade with the New York Rangers, with a condition attached to it that's now know.

After months of trade rumors and reports of a rift in the locker room, the Vancouver Canucks have finally traded forward J.T. Miller as he's heading to the New York Rangers.

Condition revealed on first-round pick acquired by the Vancouver Canucks

Along with J.T. Miller, the Vancouver Canucks have sent prospect Jackson Dorrington and defenseman Erik Brannstrom ,who they acquired from Colorado in October, to the New York Rangers on Friday night.
In return, the Vancouver Canucks added former first rounder Filip Chytil, 22-year-old defensive prospect Victor Mancini and a 2025 conditional first-round pick.
It was unclear at the time what the condition was on that draft pick that Patrik Allvin acquired this evening, but now we know thanks to TSN hockey insider Chris Johnston.
According to Chris Johnston, the 2025 first-round pick is top-13 protected, meaning if that selection happens to be 13th or higher, then the Vancouver Canucks will receive a 2026 unprotected first rounder instead.
"The 2025 first-round pick #NYR are sending Vancouver in the J.T. Miller trade is top-13 protected. Should it land that high, the pick converts to an unprotected 2026 first-rounder." Johnston said.
With J.T. Miller and his $8 million cap hit off the books now, the Vancouver Canucks will now shift their attention elsewhere on the trade market, with Swedish forward Elias Pettersson likely the next one on the move before March 7th.
Along with Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser is an option to be traded by the Vancouver Canucks before the deadline, with contract extension talks appearing to be non-existent at this time.
The Vancouver Canucks are set to wrap up their road trip tonight against the Dallas Stars in their first game in the post-J.T. Miller era. Puck drop is set for 5 pm PT on Sportsnet.
