Former Canucks assistant coach Rick Bowness honoured by junior hockey league
Former Vancouver Canucks assistant coach Rick Bowness was honoured by a junior hockey league this week.
One week after the Winnipeg Jets' season game to an end, their head coach, Rick Bowness, announced his retirement from hockey after 40 years behind the bench. His time in the National Hockey League included seven seasons as an assistant coach for the Vancouver Canucks.
On Wednesday, Bowness attended the Maritime Hockey Summit in Fredericton, New Brunswick and was honoured by the Maritime Hockey League (MHL) for his lifetime achievement in the sport.
"The Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) has honoured coaching legend Rick Bowness for his lifetime achievement in hockey, as well as being a role model and mentor through the years in the region. Bowness, who recently retired from coaching in the NHL after 38 seasons, headlined the Coaching Symposium at the Maritime Hockey Summit on Wednesday and took part in the Hot Stove Meet & Greet that evening."
Bowness, 69, spent 35 seasons behind the bench in the National Hockey League with the original Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders, Phoenix Coyotes, Vancouver Canucks, Tampa Bay Lightning, Dallas Stars and wrapped up his career with two seasons back where it all began - Winnipeg.
During his seven years as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks, Bowness helped the team to six Northwest Division titles, won the President' Trophy in back-to-back seasons and in 2011, was on the bench as the team made it to the Stanley Cup Final.
It's great to see Rick Bowness honoured for his dedication to the sport he spent four decades working in. From everyone here at Canucks Daily, we'd like to congratulate Rick Bowness on this honour.
