The Vancouver Canucks made a pair of big deals on Friday evening, one of which addressed a major need the organization had - a top-four defenseman.

On Friday night, Patrik Allvin made a deal with the New York Rangers that saw J.T. Miller go back to The Big Apple and hours later, struck a deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins for Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor.

Insider reveals intentions for potential contract extension talks with Marcus Pettersson & Drew O'Connor

Both Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor are in the final year of their respective contracts this season and are set to become unrestricted free agents on Canada Day.
Despite only playing one game with the club so far, it appears that Patrik Allvin and the Vancouver Canucks would like to keep Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor around beyond the 2024-25 campaign.
On the Saturday Headlines segment of Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Vancouver Canucks intend on having contract extension talks with the agents for Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor.
"And also, the two newest Canucks in terms of who need extensions - Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor. Don't forget, Rutherford and Allvin had big impacts on getting them to Pittsburgh in the first place and they will be eager to sign him, I think, sign both of them." Friedman said.
Pettersson, 28, is a player that the Vancouver Canucks have been trying to acquire for a while now and he'll be a big piece of the team's top-four for the remainder of the season.
In 48 games this season, the Skelleftea, Sweden native has 18 points (three goals, 15 assists), 25 penalty minutes and is a minus-three.
As for Drew O'Connor, he brings some more speed to the Canucks' bottom-six forward group and has the ability to play up and down the lineup on any given night.
In 54 games, O'Connor has registered 16 points (six goals, ten assists), 16 penalty minutes and is a minus-14.
The Vancouver Canucks will likely wait until after the trade deadline to begin contract talks with either player so they can get a more clear picture on their cap situation, incase someone else is dealt or acquired before March 7th.
