The Vancouver Canucks suffered a disappointing 4-3 overtime loss in a matinee matchup with the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. Quinn Hughes was controversially called for a hooking penalty on Red Wings defenseman Jake Walman in the extra frame. Walman would score on the ensuing penalty shot, and once again did his famous «Griddy» celebration.

The Canucks held a 3-1 lead entering the 3rd period, which was cut in half by a Daniel Sprong tally just over two minutes into the period. Michael Rasmussen tied the game at three nearly eight minutes into the frame. It would only take the Wings 23 seconds to seal the deal in overtime.

The Canucks sudden collapse on Saturday afternoon unfortunately snapped an impressive streak dating back to November of 2022 they had won 43 consecutive games when entering the 3rd period with a multi-goal lead. That streak, evidently, is now over.

Nils Hoglander and Elias Pettersson both scored, while Filip Hronek scored a beautiful breakaway goal in his return to Detroit. He also added two assists. Vancouver remains atop the Pacific Division despite the loss.
