LATEST | Patrik Allvin just confirmed an important rumour regarding Elias Pettersson
Prior to the 2023-24 season, Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson told Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman in an interview that he intended on waiting to sign a contract with the team and wasn't in a rush to put pen to paper.
As the months went by and there was no news regarding a contract extension for the Swedish forward, fans began to worry, but eventually, one week before the trade deadline, the Canucks and Pettersson agreed to terms on an eight-year deal beginning next season.
Prior to the trade deadline, Elias Pettersson's name came up in rumours with Friedman, among others, reporting that the Carolina Hurricanes made an offer for him. Ultimately, a trade never happened and in an interview on Monday with Pierre LeBrun, Allvin was asked if dealing Pettersson was a possibility.
Allvin told LeBrun that teams did call him about Pettersson and he isn't sure if he would have actually traded the 25-year-old, but is happy he's under contract for a long time.
"I mean, again, my job is to try to be ahead of things, and yeah, teams are calling when there's a player like that who potentially is walking into his last year as (an) RFA and we've seen other teams who have struggled signing players like that," Allvin said without naming Matthew Tkachuk and his forced exit out of Calgary two years ago as an RFA one year away from UFA status.
"So, I don't know but we're very happy to get him signed." For the organization and fans of the Vancouver Canucks, it's a good thing they didn't move on from Pettersson. While he hasn't played very well over the last few weeks, he's still a very important piece to this team and for the future.
Pettersson, a native of Sundsvall, Sweden, is on his way to a second consecutive 100+ point season and is currently second on the the team in points behind only J.T. Miller. In 68 games, Pettersson has 79 points (31 goals, 48 assists), ten penalty minutes and is a plus-16.
